Note: Your funding is dedicated to establishing and restoring native forests. Tree numbers are an estimate of plantings and expected carbon credit generation. By joining a plan, you’re purchasing a set amount of future carbon credits linked to these forests. See our terms for full details.

Why MyNativeForest

We’ve built the only end-to-end native forest program in NZ that delivers carbon rewards, transparency, and scale - for funders & landowners.

01

Real Carbon Rewards

Not donations. Your funding earns verified carbon credits you can use, hold, or retire - a benefit unique to native forest projects with us.

02

Managed by Us

We plant, restore, and manage every forest block ourselves. By not outsourcing, we keep costs down and quality high - delivering competitive pricing and long-term care.

03

50+ Years of Impact

Every dollar is tied to a specific project. We track, monitor, and report for the full life of the forest - not just at planting.

04

Built to Last

Our model funds landowners too, making native restoration financially viable. This isn’t one-sided - it’s a system designed to scale.

Where your money goes

60% of the cost goes directly into tree planting, focusing on the core mission of regenerating native forests.

20% is allocated to biodiversity support, ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of the ecosystem.

20% represents My Native Forest's profit, which helps fund operational activities and ensures the continuity of our organisation.

How we calculate our plans

We design our plans to show both the carbon rewards you receive and the true long-term impact of native forests.

1) Carbon rewards (what you receive):

For every tree funded, you earn a 50 kg CO₂ “carbon reward” over the project life. These rewards are issued as verified NZ carbon credits, based on conservative accounting to make sure you always get what’s promised.

2) True forest impact (what the forest delivers):
In reality, a native tree stores far more - typically 120–400 kg CO₂ over its lifetime (Tāne’s Tree Trust data). That’s why we also show the larger climate benefit your forest is creating, beyond the credits you hold.

3) Habitat area (what’s restored):
Native revegetation projects in NZ are planted at ~1,000–5,000 stems per hectare, depending on the site. That means each tree restores around 2–10 m² of habitat. Your plan shows the estimated area of forest your monthly contribution protects for 50+ years.

In short - You receive verified carbon rewards you can use, sell or hold, while the forest you’ve funded delivers far greater long-term climate and biodiversity benefits - and creates protected habitat that lasts for generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. You’ll keep all credits you’ve earned, and your trees will keep growing.

Do I get proof?

Yes. You’ll see your trees’ location, quarterly project updates and carbon rewards as credits in your account.

What type of carbon credits do I earn?

All carbon credits earned from your trees will be verified native forest New Zealand Units (NZUs) that are registered in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) under the Permanent Post 1989 (PP89) classification. If you choose to fund an entire forest project, we can provide options on voluntary carbon schemes.

What happens to my carbon credits if trees die?

We hold insurance for forest replacement, but ultimately, if in the worst case scenario the trees do not survive, you will not earn carbon credits as they will not exist. We have strict parameters when choosing partners to plant with based on the location, past planting success and the forest management plan/capabilities.

Can I sell or offset a fraction of a carbon credit when I have earned it?

No, currently we can only work with whole units as the registry (NZETR) your carbon is held on does not account for fractional carbon units.

Do I earn carbon credits before the trees are planted?

No, our trees are registered in the NZ ETS, this is our country's only carbon scheme. You only earn carbon credits from the trees once they are planted in our projects which happens during Winter/Spring each year.

When do you plant my trees?

Tree planting happens between August and October each year. When they are planted, you will be able to trace them to the project and follow them through project updates.

What can I do with my carbon credits once I have earned them?

- Sell them on our marketplace
- Offset them via our marketplace
- Withdraw them to your NZ ETR account and sell them on another market
